My research revealed that only one program in Canada is actually capable of facilitating neurological change during general skill acquisition. As well, the standardized, multi-sensory teaching methodology significantly improves the overall instruction methodology used by the trained teacher.  Many of the literacy programs utilized in school boards in Canada are not science based and there is no statistically significant data to objectively demonstrate program efficacy.  The Remediation Plus Literacy Program has demonstrated its efficacy across Canada, including school boards in Labrador/Newfoundland, Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta.  I have recently submitted a proposal to INAC (Indian Affairs Canada) to introduce the Remediation Plus Literacy Program into more First Nations communities in Ontario.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at marybethbiggs@shaw.ca

Our objective was to provide teachers with the skill set to increase literacy levels in students whose needs are not being met with the provincial program. The program addresses the lag in student development that is created by numerous factors. Pre and post testing indicates an increase in phonetic and word recognition scores. The structure of program is very user friendly and teachers have had positive comments on it. The skills learned by teachers are very transferable to all classroom instruction, and its use reinforces good teaching. Overall, the program has achieved the intended purpose and has become a key component in the district plan to address Literacy.  I have no difficulty in recommending its use.

Remediation Plus has been a great experience. I have witnessed first hand grade 3 students who could not read or write, gain confidence in themselves and learn to love reading. They were consistently engaged with the material and felt success on a daily basis.  Eighty percent of my students had shown improvement over the course of six months.  I would recommend this program to any teacher looking for an engaging literacy program.

It is my pleasure to offer my comments on the Remediation Plus program. As a small district (only two schools) we have faced challenges in terms of literacy levels among our students. Our students speak English as a second language and many of them face attendance issues. We looked to Remediation Plus as one of our major resources to help address this problem. In my opinion, the program has met with much success. We have invested in the program by employing it and training our primary/elementary teaching staff to use it as a primary means of literacy remediation in both schools.

“Many parents want to know what CGS can do for their child in the early years that their local public school or other private schools can’t. Using R+ as our main tool for teaching our students how to read is one of the biggest ways we can make a difference in the early learning of your child. When children feel successful in language arts from the very beginning their progress in all areas of the curriculum is improved. They become confident learners, ready to take on more challenges every day. Parents are amazed when their SK child can read independently by October. We have even introduced R+ to our youngest learners in the Early Start preschool classroom and their success has been remarkable as well. Some are reading simple words and stories at age 3.”

Paula Woods, SK Teacher

Reading Gym, District School Board of Niagara St. Catharines, Ontario

“I believe that the program is so effective because of the emphasis on phonological awareness training, explicit phonics, and multisensory learning. The curriculum is “teacher friendly” and systematic, and there is only about 5 minutes of preparation before each lesson. The students find the program fun and stimulating, and they are very motivated by their success. The students are engaged in learning due to the multisensory nature of the program – it’s a hands on approach that engages all of their senses, which helps them learn better. Several LD teachers within the District School Board of Niagara have reported excellent results with their students! I love the program, so much that we are now using the program in our private practice.”

“I work with the Niagara Catholic District School Board as communicative disorder assistant. I sent my children to the Reading Gym summer program that used the Remediation Plus system. I was so impressed, I felt I could also provide this solution to families. Schools can only do so much as they are serving the majority. We now provide students in South Niagara with the Remediation Plus program. It’s an incredibly effective program. If I am asked by a teacher in another region if they should choose R+, I say definitely!”

Angie Rubino, Master Reading Teacher

Ottawa Carlton District School Board

“I am going into my seventh year teaching Remediation Plus at school one on one and I now also tutor with it at night. I get nothing put positive comments from the kids, how it makes a huge difference in their reading and spelling. I have not had one student that has not shown exceptional progress. It’s a pretty amazing solution that really works.”

Janet Dorken

Waterloo Catholic District School Board

“Remediation Plus’s comprehensive and multi-sensory approach to phonics and phonemic awareness instruction has allowed staff to use the program. We enjoy that it cuts down on unnecessary gathering of additional materials. What a time-saver this is!! Our students love the hands-on materials and multi-sensory approach and more importantly that they are achieving success where they hadn’t before. Even older students are enjoying the learning materials and the gains they are making!!!”

"We give Remediation Plus an A+; it is a powerful tool to refine your teaching methods for both emergent and struggling readers."

Parent

"In June 2002 I was referred to your centre. This was the turning point in our lives and especially Reinhard's. I never thought that in such a short space of time, his whole life would be different. Three weeks into coming to you and he could read! He is now doing exceptionally well and has so much confidence in himself. He is so proud that he can read and so eager to go to his lessons ...this has truly given a new meaning to his life. Remediation Plus not only gave him confidence with his language ability but also in other aspects of his life."

Karen de Sousa Costa

Teacher

"The Remediation Plus program works so efficiently and quickly that both students and parents are often overwhelmed and pleased by the result ...their personality changes, they become happier, and school becomes a happier place for them."

"Over the last several years, I have referred many of my clients diagnosed with a reading or spelling lag, dyslexia, or learning disability to Remediation Plus."

"I have charted improvements of approximately 1.5-2.0 grade levels in reading in as little as 48 lessons. I highly recommend the purchase of these materials."

Abby Corrigan

"I have had high school students who were reading four to five years below grade level improve two years completing half the program in a matter of six weeks of intensive training. They went on to improve at least another full grade during mastery of the remaining lessons. This program is the most amazing and successful program that I have worked with over the last twelve years in terms of reading intervention. It is multi-sensory and multi-systemic, so it targets all types of learning deficits whether they are auditory, visual and/or tactile-kinesthetic in nature."

Abby Corrigan, Ph.D., C. Psych

International Dyslexia Association, New York, New York

"You have devised materials that are clear and precise with easy-to-follow lesson plans. I must admit that I learned some useful techniques watching your videos. Your calm and quiet approach must make viewers feel that even they can do it, too. I hope you are able to spread this system far and wide. It deserves to be taken seriously by school systems that want to address the problems of language learning disabilities and dyslexia."

Judith R. Birsh, Ed. D., President

Ottawa Technical Learning Centre

"The Ottawa Technical Learning Centre, a vocational high school, began a pilot project with Remediation Plus in February 2003. The program is being continued this year with great success. These older students, ages 16-18, are appreciative of the classes and they are thriving with their new-found knowledge and skills that the Remediation Plus program has given them ...our students have been very successful in the short period of time that we have been delivering the program. The time factor along with the success rate is a positive step toward Literacy in the high school setting."
